Abstract

Jan Ott (2018) objects to the methodology used in Economic Freedom of the World index of economic freedom, a project which I am directly involved in. In the previous issue of this journal, I commented on Ott, and he graciously replied. In retrospect, I feel that my treatment of the main issues was not as clear and simple as it could have been. In this brief rejoinder I present an interpretation of our differences based on what I feel is an improved understanding of the discourse.

This article is a response to Leave Size of Government Out of the Measurement of Economic Freedom—Put Quality of Government In by Jan Ott (EJW, March 2022).

Response to this article by Jan Ott: Free Markets Require Good Governments, for the Sake of Liberalism (EJW, September 2022).
