Abstract

In an article published in Sustainability in 2024, Michael Olumekor, Harman Preet Singh, and Ibrahim Abdullah Alhamad present a regional study of the uptake of online grocery shopping in Russia. We show that their analysis has multiple weaknesses: (1) they rely on a subsample of regions where there is no need to, (2) they fail to scale their dependent variable, and (3) they overlook cross border sales. When working with the full sample, and after addressing other shortcomings, we find that regional income is not the only determinant—internet access also plays a significant role. Moreover, our results suggest that the effect of income may be overestimated by a factor as high as 16.
