Abstract

This article provides English-language readers with a taste of Pierre de Boisguilbert (1646–1714), and for the first time. Boisguilbert may be said to have commenced, in 1695, what would become an unbroken line of liberal economics in France, and thus is France’s first great liberal economist. Three sets of excerpts are presented here. One is from the 25-point summary of his 1695 work The State of France (Le Détail de la France). The second set of excerpts, here called “Are We to Wait for the End of the War?,” comes from a memorial included in his 1707 The Real Situation of France (Factum de la France). The third is three letters concerning his exile and persecution in 1707.
