Daniel Jong Schwekendiek is an associate professor at Sungkyunkwan University, a private university in South Korea supported by the Samsung conglomerate. An economic histor­ian and population economist with a special interest in the two Koreas, his articles have appeared in Economic History Review, Social Science and Medicine, and Population and Development Review, among others. He is the author of A Socioeconomic History of North Korea (McFarland, 2011) and South Korea: A Socioeconomic Overview from the Past to Present (Transaction, 2016).
