Hiroshi Mizuta

Hiroshi Mizuta is a leading scholar of the history of European social thought. He holds degrees from Tokyo University (BCom, 1941), University of Glasgow, and Kyoto University (Ph.D. in economics, 1960). He taught at Nagoya University 1949–1983, Meijo University 1983–1994, and since 1998 has been emeritus professor at Nagoya University. He took up the work started by James Bonar of cataloguing Adam Smith’s library. In 1967 he published Adam Smith’s Library: A Supplement to Bonar’s Catalogue with a Checklist of the Whole Library, the checklist being reproduced here by permission (and supplemented here with a list of once-elusive titles). In 2000, Professor Mizuta published Adam Smith’s Library: A Catalogue (Oxford University Press).
