Although I was among the earliest supporters of Econ Journal Watch , I am pleased to say that the project has proved to be even better than I expected it to be. The range of topics has been wide and has included some of the most fundamental issues with which economists grapple. The critiques have flushed out some of the profession’s leading figures to defend their research against challenges that they probably would never have had to face absent EJW . Important topics that the major journals tend to omit entirely, such as the effect of recommended policies on liberty, have been raised. Most important, the entire project has operated at a very high level of quality and professionalism—there has been nothing amateurish or second-rate about it. I believe that EJW is performing an extremely valuable purpose for the economics profession, and I hope that it will continue to operate indefinitely. As it becomes even better known among economists, it can only get better.
