Stefán Ólafsson is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Iceland. He was educated at the Universities of Edinburgh and of Oxford. His research has mainly been in the areas of welfare, incomes, taxes, labour markets, and social change. He has served on the Council of the University of Iceland, the Council of Science and Technology of Iceland (Vísinda- og tækniráð Íslands), and he was Chairman of the Board of the Social Security Administration (2007–2017), which operates the social security system of Iceland. He is also a member of the European Social Policy Network (ESPN), a network of 30 independent specialists who do consultative work for the European Commission in Brussels.
