Jason Briggeman, 416 Thank Yous

In 2011, Jason Briggeman joined EJW and immediately raised its game. He quickly took a co-owner’s pride in enhancing EJW’s fairness and other merits as much as he possibly could—and that could has been huge.

Now, after 15 years, having worked his magic on some 416 articles that EJW published over those years—and on much else pertaining to EJW—Jason has decided to step away from the position of managing editor. This issue, March 2025, is the last Jason issue!

The relationship between Jason and myself is one of mutual loyalty and criticism. The relationship has been a battery of the journal. I rely on Jason to test and police my tendencies. He has a superb critical faculty, and once that faculty has marked its target, his marksmanship is inspired. When my own thoughts are the target, I feel it! His feedback always leads me to revise if not desist.

Jason’s critical faculty gets turned toward each author, as he resourcefully thinks over what the author says and tests his or her claims about the world. EJW relies on academic referees, but Jason’s feedback has very often been the most important. And authors again and again have expressed as much directly to him. A great many of the 416 articles published during Jason’s tenure are significantly better by virtue of his critical eye.

Jason is not abandoning us: He remains a partner, a retired patron, and already he is training new help.

An old slogan of free-market economists: Substitutes are everywhere! It’s a healthy, positive attitude, and usually apt. But it doesn’t feel so apt on this bittersweet occasion.

Thanks, amigo. Congratulations on an amazing 15 years. And all the best to you and family in the years ahead.
